Psalm 138 — God Knows Everything: The Incomparable Relief of Being Fully Known and Loved

"O Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether... The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever." — Psalm 139:1-4 / Psalm 138:8
One of the deepest yearnings of the human soul—and simultaneously one of its greatest fears—is to be fully and truly known. In our daily lives, we often wear invisible masks. We carefully measure our words, conceal our weaknesses, and mask our weariness so that we will not be judged, rejected, or misunderstood by those around us. We often carry a lingering anxiety that if people were to witness our deepest doubts, our private battles, or our quiet fears, they might turn away.
Yet, in the presence of the Creator of the universe, reality is profoundly different. Scripture reveals one of the most liberating truths any person can ever embrace: God knows everything about you, understands you completely, and yet loves you with an everlasting, unfailing love.
Before a Word Is on Your Tongue, He Already Knows It
There are seasons when sorrow, fatigue, or bewilderment become so overwhelming that we cannot even find the right words to pray. We kneel or sit in silence with a heavy heart, feeling as though we lack the eloquence to articulate our needs before Heaven.
It is precisely in those moments that this divine promise shines brightest:
"Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether." — Psalm 139:4
What an extraordinary relief! God does not demand polished speeches or rehearsed religious phrases. Long before you can frame a plea, He already perceives the deepest cry of your heart. He understands your quiet sighs, your wordless tears, and the ache that words cannot capture. When you draw near to Him, you never need to pretend to be strong; you can come with complete transparency, confident that you are welcomed with boundless grace.
Three Practical Steps to Rest in His Knowledge
To walk each day with the serene assurance that you are held by the God who knows all and provides all, put these three spiritual practices into action:
- Lay down your masks in His presence: In your daily devotional time, cast aside every pretense. Speak to the Lord with raw honesty about your feelings, your fears, and your questions. You will discover that peace and restorative grace flow freely when you no longer try to hide.
- Surrender control over the unknown future: Much of our modern anxiety stems from attempting to manage outcomes we cannot control. Remember that while tomorrow is unknown to you, God is already there. Rest in the knowledge that His plans for your good exceed your fleeting worries.
- Proclaim His purpose in difficult moments: Whenever circumstances fail to align with your expectations, speak aloud the truth of Psalm 138:8: "The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me." Declaring this truth silences discouragement and restores courage to your spirit.
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life." — Psalm 139:23-24
