"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." — Philippians 4:13
It is probably one of the most well-known and quoted verses in the entire Bible. We often see it on social media profiles, sports apparel, and tattoos. However, to understand the true magnitude and comfort of this promise, we must look at the context in which the apostle Paul wrote it.
The Secret of Contentment
Paul didn't write this letter from a marble palace or during a relaxing vacation. He wrote these words while being a prisoner in Rome. He was in chains, awaiting a trial that could end in his execution.
Despite his circumstances, he declares: "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty... I can do all this through him who gives me strength".
Christ's strength is not a magic formula to win a football game, pass an exam without studying, or become a millionaire. It is something much deeper and more vital: it is the supernatural power to maintain peace, joy, and faith in any circumstance of life.
In Every Moment
- In scarcity and need, Christ strengthens you to not despair and to trust in His provision.
- In sickness and pain, Christ strengthens you to endure the process with hope.
- In abundance and success, Christ strengthens you to not become prideful and to remain humble and generous.
- In absolute weakness, when you feel like you can't take another step, Christ's strength is made perfect in you.
Our human capacity has a limit. Our resources run out, our energy fades, and our emotions fluctuate. But when we come to the end of ourselves, that is where God's inexhaustible strength begins.
Today, whatever "mountain" you are facing or "valley" you are crossing, you are not alone. You have at your disposal the same divine strength that raised Jesus from the dead. Lean on Him, because in Him, you truly can do all things.
